Armed bandits rob, terrorise Newtown family

A family of five endured a harrowing experience after three masked gunmen entered their Lot 181 D'Abreu Street, Newtown, home early Friday morning, and carted off an estimated 1M in cash and jewellery.

Forty-one-year-old Hemrajie King sustained head injuries after receiving a severe beating from the perpetrators.

She is being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation

According to her eldest son, Bharrat, 24, who was at home and tightly bound at the time of the robbery; the incident occurred between 1 and 2 am.

He said that he was suddenly awakened by a man who was holding what appeared to be an automatic handgun, and pointing at his face. King said that he was then taken to his parents' room.

There, he and his father Kirk, 45, had their hands feet and faces taped together, before being placed face down on the floor.

According to Bharrat, the men started to beat his mother almost immediately after binding him and his father.

He said that they dragged her into the hall of the house where they hammered her head and right side face with the butt of the gun, while demanding money and jewellery.

He said his father had direct the bandits to a quantity of cash which he had stashed in the bedroom shortly before he was taped up.

Unsatisfied with the amount received, they continued to beat the woman mercilessly until she retrieved some smaller pieces of jewellery complementing a set which had been handed over a short while before.

They also threatened to kill the youngest member of the family, six-year-old Brandon King, if more money wasn't handed over.

According to (Bharrat) King, by the time the bandits were through, they had received around $1M in cash and jewellery.

He said that three men were inside the house for almost 45 minutes, as they rummaged through the shelves, cupboards and wardrobes in search of more valuables.

Five men were said to be on the involved in the robbery - with two as ‘lookouts' - and the King family strongly believes the perpetrators were from around the Newtown area.

According the Bharrat King, the men had to have been aware of the family's routine since they took all the necessary precautions to ensure that the neighbours across the street, and relatives living down stairs, were not awoken or alarmed.

From the available evidence, the perpetrators' point of entry, appeared to be a louvre window near the front door, which was removed and the wooden bars inside wrenched out.

Of the five men, according to the Kings, one appear to be in his early teens, small enough to fit through the little space left by the removed louvre.

Hemrajie King is still in the care of the GPHC; having underwent a cat scan, due to the extensive head and face beating. Kirk King, who was also beaten in the face and chest, sustained minor injuries.

No one else was injured during the ordeal.

Additionally, it was noted that the men apparently had a car waiting for them about a block away, since they disappeared mere seconds after heading north on D'Abreu street.
